Milhares de santos dos últimos dias se reuniram na Praça do Templo, e nos arredores da sede da Igreja, em uma tarde ensolarada de outono no sábado, 5 de outubro, para a segunda das cinco sessões da 194ª Conferência Geral Semestral da Igreja.
Os participantes da conferência ficaram de pé reverentemente quando Presidente Russell M. Nelson, que não participou da sessão da manhã da conferência geral, entrou no Centro de Conferências para a segunda sessão.
Élder D. Todd Christofferson, do Quórum dos Doze Apóstolos, abriu a sessão contando a história dos lamanitas convertidos pelos filhos de Mosias, que enterraram suas armas de rebelião.
“Podemos nos perguntar o que podemos fazer para seguirmos este padrão, para ‘depor [nossas] armas de rebelião’, sejam elas quais forem, e nos tornarmos tão ‘convertidos ao Senhor’ que a mancha do pecado e o desejo de pecar sejam tirados de nosso coração e nunca cairemos.”

Dois outros apóstolos, Élder Ulisses Soares e Élder Patrick Kearon, também discursaram durante a sessão, dirigida por outro Apóstolo, Élder Gerrit W. Gong.
Élder Soares encorajou os santos dos últimos dias a alinharem sua vontade com a do Senhor. “Fazer da vontade do Senhor a nossa, decisivamente e sem questionamentos, requer um discipulado majestoso e heroico.”
Porque os santos dos últimos dias conhecem o plano amoroso do Pai Celestial, e por causa da missão redentora de Jesus Cristo, Élder Kearon disse: “podemos, e devemos, ser as pessoas mais alegres da Terra”.
Élder José A. Teixeira, da Presidência dos Setenta, e Élder Juan Pablo Villar também discursaram, assim como Élder David L. Buckner, Élder D. Martin Gourye Élder Aroldo B. Cavalcante, todos Setentas Autoridades Gerais.
Um destaque da sessão incluiu um coro da Primária composto por crianças de 8 a 12 anos de estacas do norte de Utah, que cantou alguns hinos do novo hinário global, incluindo “Getsêmani” e “Quando o Salvador voltar”.
Élder Ciro Schmeil, Setenta Autoridade Geral, e a presidente Susan H. Porter, presidente geral da Primária, ofereceram a oração de abertura e encerramento, respectivamente.
